Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds Scores With a Smart Strike Filly

2007 2 Year old Partnership "SOLD OUT" at Record Pace
March 20, 2008 - Ocala, Florida

It didn't take long for Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds to take center stage at the Adena Springs Sale of 2 Year Olds in Training in Ocala, Florida on Monday. Joe Orseno, representing Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds, jumped on the first horse in the ring, Hip #1. The filly, by Smart Strike, sire of Breeders Cup winners Curlin and English Channel, caught the attention of the partners in Capitol Hill.

Chris Venis, founder and President of Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds said, "The response we got to this filly was nothing short of amazing. Within three days, the partnership in her was SOLD OUT. Techincally speaking, it was closer to 24 hours. When you get a nice filly with her pedigree and conformation you'd expect alot of attention, but this response was unbelieveable."

Bill McClintock, one of Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds lontime investors said, "When Chris and Joe say "GO", we go! After Chris forwarded me the video of her, my decision took all of about 30 seconds. She is something special."

The filly, still unnamed, will be heading north to Monmouth Park with Joe Orseno in April as he brings his string from Gulfstream back to the New Jersey shore. Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds' Vice President of Field Operations, Bill Hauck, stated, "Chris called me and said I am forwarding a video of the new filly and asked "what do you think?" "What do I think? I think you better hurry up and buy her!"

Smart Strike continues to impress in the stallion ranks. Astute breeders have long considered SMART STRIKE one of the best sources in the business of tough-as-nails, fast race horses who could compete on a variety of surfaces. But after a record-setting 2007, there is no doubt that SMART STRIKE has taken his rightful place alongside the sport's elite stallions.

The point was hammered home on Breeders' Cup day. First, the five-year-old English Channel romped over an accomplished international field in the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf. That was followed by Curlin's dazzling effort in the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic, where he beat one of the best fields ever assembled for the race with a powerhouse performance.

The point was further hammered home on Eclipse Awards night, when both English Channel and Curlin were recognized with championships. Curlin was named Horse of the Year and Champion Three-Year-Old Male, while English Channel walked away with Champion Turf Male honors.

The exploits of those horses--and of his 14 others stakes winners in 2007--helped boost SMART STRIKE's progeny earnings to more than $14,4 million, which set a new mark for single-season record for earnings by a sire, eclipsing the great Danehill's 2001 record of $13,542,612.

6/17/06 - JERSEY PEACH Dominant in Jersey Breeder’s Handicap

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Oceanport, NJ – Move over Bruce Springsteen, there is a new “boss” in New Jersey!

Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds' Jersey Peach was impressive in victory Sunday at Monmouth Park in the $125,000.00 Jersey Breeder's Handicap. It truly was a New Jersey victory, the horse was born in New Jersey, a New Jersey name, the trainer was born in New Jersey, the breeder’s are from New Jersey, the jockey was born in New Jersey and the partnership is based in New Jersey.

Sitting just off the pace with fractions of 22.4, 46, 1:10.4, 1:37, 1:43.3, Jersey Peach forged to the lead at the top of the stretch and drew away strongly, driving away from the field by 6 1/2 widening lengths.

"This horse was awesome today", stated Chris Venis, President of Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds. "He seems to be adapting well to the distance and is really blossoming into a high quality horse. Any student of pedigree will agree that his sire Forest Wildcat, not only throw's precocious runners, but also a runner that gets better as they get older, himself running best during his 5 year old season. I feel confident that Jersey Peach will continue to improve as he gets older."

Jersey Peach, trained by Joe Orseno and ridden by Chris DeCarlo, raced the mile and a sixteenth over a fast track in 1:43 3/5 and paid $24.60, $10.60 and $4.60 across the board. He topped a $368.20 exacta with the 28-1 Fagedaboudit Sal.

This was the first stakes victory for Jersey Peach, a 4-year-old son of Forest Wildcat, who was second to Meadow Blue last out in the Lincroft Handicap.

Lifetime: 16 starts 4 times 1st, 3 times second, 3 times third, $219,469.00

Jersey Peach Impressive in Lincroft Stakes

August 6, 2006 - Oceanport, NJ - Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds’ Jersey Peach attempting two turns for the first time was a very impressive runner-up in the Lincroft Handicap at Monmouth Park on Haskell Day 2006.

Chris Venis, President of Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds said, “Jersey Peach is a tremendous athlete and his athleticism showed itself today.  Not only was it his first attempt at two turns, but it was against proven stakes winners.  His sire, Forest Wildcat throws tremendous sprinters and recently he is showing that he can sire two turn horses as well.  Our trainer, Joe Orseno, did a tremendous job getting this horse ready for the race.  He only had 3 weeks of training to get him to go longer.  We have discussed in the past about running him two turns and it looks like we found a great spot for him.”

Venis went on to say, “We are very excited for the 2nd place finish, the winner is a future graded stakes horse.  Jersey Peach made a tremendous move around the far turn and took a brief lead and was collared mid stretch by the winner.  Peach was tenacious in defeat and actually made a second move along the rail to challenge the winner at the 1/8 pole and was outrun to the wire.  Jersey Peach left the rest of the field in his wake some 10 lengths back.  Those horses behind him have earned in excess of $1,000,000.00.  I’ll tell you one thing is that the winner (Meadow Blue) would have given Bluegrass Cat all he could handle in the Haskell.”

The Lincroft Handicap went in 23.2, 47.3, 1.11.7, 1:36.5 and finished in a very fast 1:40.6, just 1 1/2 seconds slower than the track record.  What made this race all the more impressive is that the fractions in this race were faster than the $1 Million Haskell, from the quarter through the mile in 1:36.5.

The current crop of New Jersey breds are very impressive of late, most recently being represented by Park Avenue Ball, Joey P., Meadow Blue, Who’s the Cowboy and Jersey Peach.  Jersey Peach and Who’s the Cowboy have had some epic clashes in the sprint division in the past.  Jersey Peach’s earning have now totaled nearly $150,000.

Jersey Peach Rolls to Victory at Monmouth Park Wins $50,000.00 Allowance by 5 Lengths

Oceanport, NJ – Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds’ Jersey Peach was an easy winner at Monmouth Park on Monday, May 29, 2006. Jersey Peach, a 4 year old son of Forest Wildcat, stalked the pace and made an explosive move on the far turn to win by 5 widening lengths in a $50,000.00 allowance for NJ breds.

Chris Venis, President of Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds said, “That was one of the most impressive moves I seen in a long time. He (Jersey Peach) pulled Jockey Joe Bravo to the lead and won easily under a hand ride. Joe only tapped him 2 times with the whip, he could have won by 10 if he pushed him. In addition, this was his first start in 6 months.” The fractions of the race were very fast at 22, 45.1, 57.2 and 1:10.2 for 6 furlongs. In comparison, one of the East Coasts’ top sprinters, Joey P., recorded a 1:10.4 for the same distance only 2 days earlier.

To the delight of the crowd, Jersey Peach was a sight to see in the paddock. You could hear the “ooooh’s and ahhh’s” has he walked in.

This was the 5th win of the meet for trainer Joe Orseno who has an incredible 50% win percentage. Orseno finished 3rd in the Monmouth Park trainer standings in 2005.

What’s next for Jersey Peach? Venis went on to say, “We have a lot of options with him and we will discuss his next start after he gets a well deserved rest. The way he finished that race opens up a lot of doors for us and we are considering some upcoming stakes races as well as maybe a trip to New York.”

Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds New 2006 Partnerships Now Open
Offers 2 Year Old’s in Training

March 8, 2006 – New York, New York

It doesn’t come with a high temperature, a headache or upset stomach, but it sure is a FEVER, Kentucky Derby Fever. Racing fans throughout the globe are waking to spring and the yearly Kentucky Derby Fever.

Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds, a thoroughbred racing partnership, is now offering a 2006 2 Year Olds in Training partnership. Chris Venis, President and founder of Capitol Hill states, “Unfortunately, it (Derby Fever) has no medicinal cure but a sure way to alleviate it is to hop on in with both feet and enjoy thoroughbred racing up close and personal. I don’t care what anyone tells you, every owner of a 2 year old has the dream of owning a future Triple Crown contender and that is our goal at Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds. We have been very lucky to have a wonderful roster horses, but lets be clear, our goal is to get to the Triple Crown and the only affordable way to do it is to buy 2 year olds.”

Capitol Hill Thoroughbreds has had great success over the past 2 years, owning an incredible 70% (win, place or show) on the board ratio! Venis went on to say, “In modern day racing, we face competition with limitless financial resources, just last week a 2 year old sold for $16 million. Guess, what? When the gates open our horses will be running against those $16 million dollar horses and we are confident that we can compete with them. Our trainer, Joe Orseno, and advisors have done an incredible job in training and purchasing bloodstock. It is well know in racing circles that very few of these high priced horses ever amount to anything worthwhile. The most successful horses have come from the $50,000-$250,000 price range and that is right where we play.”

The Capitol Hill team will be heading to the Ocala Breeder’s Sale, Adena Springs Sale and Fasig Tipton Sale through the end of May. “We will inspect several hundred prospects and narrow down the decision to only a handful. It is a very exciting process and encourage our partners to join us during the auction.”
